Sertraline Drug
The Sertraline drug has been presented by Pfizer, under brand name
of Zoloft in 1991. It is an antidepressant of the selective serotonin
reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) class, primarily used to treat clinical
depression in adult outpatients
as well as obsessive-compulsive
disorders in both adults and children. In 2006 it was the most
prescribed antidepressant on the U.S. retail market.
Generic Drugs
According to the FDA, a generic drug is identical, or bioequivalent
to a brand name drug in dosage form, safety, strength, route of
administration, quality, performance characteristics and intended
use. It is a drug which is produced and distributed without patent
protection.
Generic Sertraline
Although, the brand version of the Sertraline drug is made by Pfizer,
the first generic Sertraline version has been approved by FDA on
June 30, 2006. This generic Sertraline drug is made by Ivax Pharmaceuticals.
It is much cheaper version
of this drug.
